Phoning refers to an outbound call campaign conducted on a contact list with a single, measurable objective: qualify a list, get an appointment, invite to an event, or follow up on quotes. It is a short, structured format, as opposed to a salesperson's continuous prospecting.

Phoning, teleprospecting, cold calling: the differences

TermWhat it refers toTypical duration
PhoningA call campaign on a file, for a specific objectiveA few days to a few weeks
TeleprospectingPhone prospecting as a regular sales activityContinuous
Cold callingCalling a contact who doesn't know you yetOne call, one sequence

Preparing a phoning campaign in five steps

  1. 1Set a single objective per campaign. "Booking a 20-minute meeting" is measurable; "increasing brand awareness" is not.
  2. 2Build the list: a homogeneous target (same sector, same role), the source of each contact noted, and professionals separated from individuals.
  3. 3Write a short script: hook, reason for the call, a question, the request. Anticipate the three most likely objections.
  4. 4Choose call slots and stick to them, then compare results from one slot to another on your own list.
  5. 5Define a follow-up cadence: number of attempts per contact, delay between them, and when to stop.

Minimal phoning script

StepExample phrasing
Introduction"Hello, Camille from [company]. I'm calling about [specific subject]."
Reason"We help [role] in [sector] to [concrete result]."
Question"How do you handle [problem] today?"
Request"Would you be open to 20 minutes on Tuesday or Thursday to discuss it?"

Key indicators to track

  • Calls made and contacts reached (a real person on the line).
  • Pitched conversations (beyond the introduction).
  • Appointments booked, and appointments actually held.
  • Contacts to remove: wrong number, opt-out request, out of target.

Do not compare your figures to "market averages" found online: they mix unrelated sectors and files. Compare your own campaigns. To estimate required volume, use the homepage simulator with your own hypotheses.

Rules to respect in 2026

Since August 11, 2026, cold calling an individual requires prior consent and Bloctel has been abolished. B2B phoning remains possible, respecting GDPR: known list origin, clear introduction, unmasked number, and immediate honor of opt-out requests. Our Bloctel guide includes a tool to check specific cases.

In-house or outsourced phoning?

Outsourcing saves time during peak periods, but you lose learning: objections heard, phrasings that work. In-house, a dialer that sequences numbers and logs results reduces time lost between calls, which is often the main bottleneck of a campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is cold calling still legal?

Yes to professionals, regarding their business activity, provided GDPR is respected. To individuals, prior consent is required since August 11, 2026.

How long does a cold calling campaign last?

It depends on the list size and the number of attempts planned per contact. Set your follow-up frequency before starting to enable planning.

Which tool to use?

A spreadsheet is enough for small lists. Beyond that, a dialer that automatically calls the next number and logs the result prevents manual data entry.
